The most effective security measures are often the least dramatic. These everyday habits cost little, take seconds and make a real difference when everyone in a building adopts them.

Lock up with a routine

Use the same closing checklist every day: windows, doors, storerooms, equipment and lights. A routine is far harder to forget than a good intention.

Control the keys

Know who holds keys and cards, record when they are issued, and collect them when someone leaves. Lost or unaccounted-for keys should be treated as a security matter, not a minor inconvenience.

Keep exits clear and doors closed

Never block an emergency exit, and do not prop open doors that are meant to stay shut. Both undermine safety in different ways.

Welcome visitors properly

  • Greet them at reception rather than letting them wander
  • Sign them in and give them a visible visitor pass
  • Have a staff member accompany them where appropriate

Report small problems early

A flickering light, a loose lock or a gap in a fence is easy to fix today and awkward to explain after an incident. Make it normal – and easy – for people to mention what they notice.

Safer premises are rarely the result of one big decision. They are the result of many small ones, made consistently.
